At the time of his death Michael Dubruiel was the Director of the Office of the New Evangelization and Stewardship in the Diocese of Birmingham in Alabama. Previous to that he had worked as an acquisitions editor for Our Sunday Visitor Books for ten years, working with popular authors such as Fr. Benedict Groeschel and Johnette Benkovic, and before that as a theology teacher at Tampa Jesuit High School in Florida. He was a laicized Catholic priest, having been ordained for the Diocese of St. Augustine in 1987, serving in parishes in the diocese and teaching at St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary. He left active priestly ministry in 1993 and was laicized in 1996.

Michael is the author of the bestselling The How-To Book of the Mass and ten other popular Catholic books, including two that he co-authored with his wife Amy Welborn dedicated to the rosary and the way of the cross.

Michael held a Master's Degree in Theology from St. Vincent de Paul Seminary and an MA in Christian Spirituality from Creighton University.
